Take the headache out of moving with these simple tips to make yourself at home as quickly as possible.
We are moving more than ever before. Whether that is within the same city, country, continent or even to the other corner of the world. Moving can be stressful regardless of how far you are move, whether you have bought a new home or renting one. So follow these quick tips to make it as easy as pie.
1. Prepare in advance.
Don’t leave it to the last day to throw all your belongings in a box or suitcase. Plan ahead of your move and discard or donate any items that you no longer use. Try and be as ruthless as possible in order to ensure that you don’t end up moving items that when you unpack in your new home you realise you no longer need.
2. Use proper packing materials.
Stock up on durable cardboard boxes to protect all the items in the move. Make sure they are strong and will withhold the weight of your belongings. Use tape to hold the boxes in place and use a thick pen to clearly mark the items in each box. Make sure you label each and every box so that once you are in your new abode, the box can be placed immediately into the correct room.
3. Give yourself enough time.
Spend time packing items to make sure packing is in an organised fashion, and so that nothing gets damaged or broken. Carefully wrap any breakables in bubble wrap, cushion the bottom of the box and place together. Don’t overload boxes so they cannot be lifted, and always place the heaviest items on the bottom first.
4. International moves.
If moving internationally there are a few additional things to consider, such as is it cheaper to buy that item in the new country rather than paying for its transportation? Also check the country’s policies on importing items or bringing in certain items such as wood to avoid large custom bills later down the line. It is also worth checking online social networks to pick the brains of those who have completed similar moves to get advice and tips.
