2016 is a good year for the horror genre. It gave us iconic movies and series that will give us nightmares for a very long time. It also gave us some home decor inspiration. These horror movies and series are nothing without the iconic haunted houses that served as the background for the suffering of the characters. Conjuring 2 (2016), dir. James Wan
Plot: Set in 1972, paranormal experts Ed and Lorraine Warren (played by Patrick Wilson and Vera Farmiga respectively) try to solve the problem of a mother of 3 who believes that their house is possessed.
The shabby and suburban house in Conjuring 2 is just like the house in the horror classic The Exorcist. It looks homey and ordinary but in the end something evil is lurking inside it.
10 Cloverfield Lane (2016), dir. Dan Trachtenberg
Plot: This psychological thriller will simply give you the chills. After a car accident, Michelle (Mary Elizabeth Winstead) wakes up in an underground bunker with two strangers. Apparently, there’s a chemical attack that made the air from above un-breathable. Watch as Michelle fights for her life against the two men who kept her from the truth on what happened above the bunker.
Half of the movie is set in this horror house’s bunker. It served as the battleground for the characters’ life. And isn’t it comforting that your house’s bunker or basement actually has use when apocalypse comes around?
American Horror Story: Raonoke (2016), prd. Ryan Murphy
Plot: The sixth season of American Horror Story is showed through a documented format wherein the re-enactors tell the story of Shelby and Matt Miller who bought a colonial farmhouse that turns out to be the house of the lost colony of Raonoke.
The plot of the latest season of American Horror Story shows a golden rule when it comes to buying a new home: you must learn its history. If both Shelby and Matt know the terrifying history of the house they might not experienced all the horros.
Don’t Breathe (2016), dir. Fede Alvarez
Plot: Three Detroit thieves thought that they have the heist of the year when they broke into the house of a blind rich veteran. Little did they know that the blind man has tricks on his own to terrorize the young criminals.
The homeowner knows the house better than anyone else. The Blind Man managed to use his knowledge of the house to create terror against the young people who are going to steal his money. It’s also a reminder to put extra security measures in your house just in case an intruder enters.
